Well it has been a long month and I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to cut Amazon out of my life as much as I’d thought. I was right to be afraid.

My “new years resolution” was a 15% reduction in Amazon orders. The first three months of the year were surprisingly successful, but showed a worrying trend of buying more and more from Amazon.

In April I was working on a car and had a trip coming up. I knew it was going to be bad. How bad though?

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

That is only a 3.6 % reduction in number of items ordered! A minor redeeming factor is the overall spend was 20.6% less. So there is that.

Still, FAIL .

I’ll try harder in May.

Would this actually be a reduction in spending, or just a redistribution of where money is being spent? I ask because for me Amazon is becoming an increasingly common supplier for common, and often consumable, goods . For instance, Amazon now delivers a 40lb bag of dog food to my door on a regular basis because they’re considerably cheaper than I can source that bag of food locally. As a bonus, I don’t even have to go out and do the whole leaving the house thing to make it happen.

Shoot! I forgot my standard disclaimer:

[Standard Disclaimer] This is not to spend less money, though that might be a happy side effect. The goal was to reduce Amazon usage because they are becoming increasingly evil, customer service and on-time fulfillment are worse then they ever have been, and Jeff Bezos is essentially a Bond villain. Plus the whole HQ2 thing? “Sponsored” search results taking over the search page? Fake reviews!? My distrust and dissatisfaction with the company has grown over the last year or so and as a result I am trying to make them less of a presence in my life.

Coincidentally, I’ve been more careful to compare what I’m buying on Amazon with what I can get in store. Sometimes the prices are worse, sometimes better, other times a small additional cost is worth the convenience of delivery versus going to a store that’s too far from me to save a couple of bucks.

camelcamelcamel is an excellent service, I use their Chrome browser extension and it makes tracking Amazon prices easy.

I’ve had to make my first return with them today since I got a frying pan (delivered next day, as promised) but it appears to have been stored poorly at the warehouse since the exterior is scuffed up and a bit of the non-stick coating isn’t looking so good in some places. It’s clearly new, but it appears that they were carelessly stacked at the warehouse or something. Fingers crossed my next one is in good condition.
